So exactly how does something like this happen?

Hmmm... well, no one really knows for sure.

Just like Two Heads Are Better Than None (which is the artwork that started it all), there are sort of two brains.

You know how it is — ying-yang, left-right, conscious-subconcious, awake-asleep — we all seem to have a double brain structure.

And we’ve all had experiences where the background brain pops something into the foreground brain if we let it.

So what you’re seeing on this web site is a physical manifestation of what my background brain works on and thinks about at least some of the time.

At least that’s a good theory. Like I said — no one knows for sure — but for the record, I don’t sit around and think this stuff up, it just happens, it just seems to pop out of “nowhere.”

A lot of it — probably most of it — originally takes the form of drawings made while talking on the phone or perhaps hanging out at the pond here at The Farrm, or while taking a break from working on something else...

In any case, it all starts with a line drawing in pencil, pen, or whatever else happens to be handy...

It’s then scanned into a computer and worked on from there.

How it came to be called Modern Primitive Art

Being a combination of one of the oldest art technologies (drawing) and one of the newest (computers), the name certainly fits, but that’s not how the name got started!

The Modern Primitive thing came from my first show, way back in the early 1990s. At this particular show, about half the people said the artwork looked like cave drawings or Petryglyphs and the other half said it looked like modern art (this work often gets compared to the modern work of Juan Miro).

So the name Modern Primitive Art was created — it stuck — and a style was born.

And finally, it all comes together

Modern Primitive Art has been through a few versions over the years, always making the best use of current technology, but until now, never achieving its full potential.

Now, thanks to breakthroughs in print making technology, it can finally be seen in its full vibrancy.

And it can finally be seen at sizes that have a full impact. You see, the larger they get, the greater an impression they make, the more they make you smile, and the closer they connect with your primitive self in a modern sort of way!

And, with the addition of digital mat versions very affordable ready-to-frame versions are available for many uses including kid’s rooms (kids love this stuff, too!), general decorating, loosening up an office environment, and of course gifts!
